Mistral opens the weights of Mistral Large 4: an MoE of about 1T parameters, priced at $0.70 input and $2.10 output per million tokens on the API
Mistral Large 4, first offered as a public preview earlier this month, now ships improved open weights aimed at coding and cybersecurity, for self-hosting or straight through the API.
// Key points
- A natively multimodal, hybrid instruct-and-reasoning MoE with about 1 trillion total parameters and 160+ languages; reasoning effort is low, medium or high, defaulting to high.
- Licensed under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license, a modified MIT: free to use, modify, fine-tune and commercialize, but businesses running Model-as-a-Service need a separate commercial license.
- 48% on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, effectively tied with GLM-5.3 while using 47% fewer tokens per task; 41% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, 13 points above the preview.
- API pricing per million tokens: $0.70 input, $0.07 cached input, $2.10 output; it refuses malicious cyber requests 96.6% of the time on average, which Mistral says is the highest it measured among open models.
Builder's takeThis is the closest the open camp has come to the closed frontier this month, but 1T parameters is not something a small team self-hosts casually, so for most products the realistic path is the API first: it sits in the same price band as Terra, and one comparison run on PandaClaws-style long-form generation will tell you whether switching pays. Watch the license: if your product itself resells model calls, that is the Model-as-a-Service case that needs a separate agreement.
