The Deno team joins Cloudflare to make self-hosted workerd a first-class way to run Workers apps
The Workers programming model takes a step from Cloudflare-only toward something you can host yourself.
// Key points
- Signed by Ryan Dahl and Kenton Varda: the Deno team is joining Cloudflare, and Ryan Dahl and Bert Belder will lead an effort to make self-hosting workerd a first-class supported way to run apps.
- celld, which the Deno team released in August, is a Rust implementation of Workers and Durable Objects shipped as one binary whose only external dependency is object storage; its code and ideas will be brought back into workerd.
- Durable Objects in workerd currently run only as a single instance, fine for local testing but unable to scale, and that is what the work targets; Cloudflare says it will share more in the coming months.
Builder's takePlenty of agent backends run on Workers plus Durable Objects, and the main worry is being tied to one cloud; if self-hosted workerd really scales, that worry shrinks. Cloudflare’s post doesn’t say what happens to the Deno runtime or Deno Deploy, so teams on Deno should wait for Deno’s own word before moving anything.
