Where it stands

OpenAI spent this week shipping product and dealing with misuse. From October 7 GPT-6 rolled out globally in ChatGPT with Intelligent UI; the same day Codex CLI 0.161.0 made GPT-6.1 Sol the default and added per-turn selection of a cyber access program; on October 8 it disclosed disrupting two AI-enabled influence operations run through false-front journalists and a think tank.

Model capability and access control are shipping together: new models become the default while sensitive capabilities like cyber go through separate access programs, and misuse disclosures have become routine. For developers, default changes directly affect cost and output.

What to watch next: whether Intelligent UI opens up through the API, GPT-6.1 Sol's stability and bill on long Codex tasks, and the full details of the influence operation disclosure.

My advice: pin model versions explicitly in CI and scripts, and compare quality and cost on non-critical jobs before adopting a new default; if your product distributes content, treat traceable account identities as a baseline requirement.
